A RETIRED nurse from Filey, who had a history of alcohol abuse, drank herself to death, an inquest heard.
Barbara Moss, 76, of West Vale, was found in her bedroom by her carer on June 24 this year. An ambulance was called but Mrs Moss was confirmed dead at the scene.
The inquest held at Norton Court heard that Mrs Moss, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease five years ago, regularly drank up to three bottles of vodka a day.
A post mortem examination carried out by Dr David Morgan, consultant pathologist at Scarborough Hospital, showed she died from a combination of acute alcohol intoxication and heart disease.
Her blood alcohol level was measured at 346 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 litres of blood – more than four times the drink drive limit – which coroner Michael Oakley said would have been enough to kill her in itself. He said: “That has been coupled with a natural disease but given the circumstances in which she was found I will record a verdict of misadventure.”
